Identification

  • Rare - Found only in garden near pond in front of FF Nature Center where it was planted.
  • Flower with 5, sharply swept-back petals and long, pointed tip
  • Rosette of spoon-shaped leaves

This showy perennial flower, more commonly known as a variety of Shooting-star, was most probably planted near the small pond in front of the Fontenelle Forest Visitors Center. Its flower stalk holds an umbel of white flowers (image C) whose petals are reflexed as shown in A & B.  Its spoon-shaped leaves are in the form of a rosette as shown in C.   Image D shows the developing fruit capsules.

This species of Shooting-star is native to the Eastern US up to Southern Missouri, but not native in Nebraska. Another species of this genus (Dodecatheon pulchellum) grows in hay meadows of Western Nebraska.
