The size of this beetle is from 2/5 to 3/5 of an inch long. Most individuals of this species look mainly black, but have small spots or markings on its back. Its coloration is dull black or brown with a bronze iridescence.
It is widespread in the eastern U.S.and is thought to be common at our two nature centers. This one was photographed in Neale Woods. Its Common habitat is bare or sparsely vegetated, dry, hard packed soil, typically in previously disturbed areas. This can include; forest trails, sand pits, eroded areas, sidewalks, yards. It is commonly found in many different habitats, including urban or populated environments.
This is a summer species with a one year life cycle. This beetle is a predator on other insects, both in the adult form and as a larvae. It is also known as the backroad tiger beetle.
