RED-BANDED LEAFHOPPER

Graphocephala coccinea

This leafhopper grows to about 3/8th of an inch long in the mature form shown. Its nymphs are mostly green (not shown). The bright red and blue above and yellow below makes this species stand out resting on a leaf or on a stem of a variety of plants. They lay eggs in slits made on soft plant tissue and feed on the juice of the plants.

 

This leafhopper is fairly common in Fontenelle Forest and Neale Woods. It may be seen throughout the growing season, to include late fall. It overwinters on the ground in leaf litter.
