RED-LEGGED GRASSHOPPER

This grasshopper is variable in coloration from grayish brown to plumbeous with green and black. They grow to about 1 inch (24mm) for the male and about 1.25 inches (29 mm) for the female. The hind tibia is red.

 

This grasshopper is very common throughout North America and is one of the most common grasshoppers seen by most observers. It can be found in a wide variety of habitats incuding rangeland, field edges, woodland openings, yards and gardens.

 

The female lays her eggs in soil in fall which hatch in spring. Adults are present from mid-summer until frost in fall. This species can be a pest for farmers growing alfalfa, clover or corn.
