A small, red, waxy, stalkless, wart-like and wrinkled mushroom. It is about – inches wide. It is broadly centrally attached.
It is seen from March to December and sometimes lasts over the winter. It is found on dead twigs and branches on trees in the poplar family (e.g. cottonwoods). It is rare in Fontenelle Forest. One was found on Hidden Lake Trail.
It bursts out from the bark of fallen limbs and logs. Also known as Stereum rufum and Cryptochaete rufa .
