ROBIN’S CARPENTERWORM

The male Robin’s Carpenterworm Moth has a wingspan of 1.75 inches and the female’s is 3.50 inches. The forewing is white with lacy, black patterning with black blotches in the median areas. The male’s hindwing is black with yellow on the outer edges. The female’s hindwing is plain, translucent gray. The legs are spotted black and white. The larva is green to reddish with scattered black dots. The head is dark reddish-brown.

 

The frequency of occurrence of the Carpenterworm Moth is not known. It has been photographed at Fontenelle Forest Nature Center in late June. The adults fly mostly in June and July.

 

This moth is also called Locust Borer. The larvae bore into ash, locust, oak, poplar and willow trees. The life cycle takes 3 to 4 years.
