ROLAND’S SALLOW

Psaphida rolandi
(Noctuidae)

This lime green caterpillar grows to about 1 1/2 inches long. It has a thin, white stripe down the sides of its abdomen, which gets more prominent towards its rear end. Other, more feint white, interrupted stripes run the length of its abdomen as well. The adult has almost black forewings and lighter gray hindwings.

The abundance of this species in our two nature centers is not yet known. But the larvae feed on fresh oak foliage, of which there is plenty present in spring.

The caterpillars feed on fresh, tender oak leaves. One generation with mature caterpillars in spring.
