This cultivated and naturalized tree grows up to 25 feet tall. It is recognized from afar by its silvery leaves (E), which are slender, up to 3 inches long and alternate on the twigs. The bell-shaped flowers with pointed lobes are orange to yellow inside (A,C). Clusters of 1-3 flowers form at the leaf nodes. The berry-like fruit ripens in September; it is tan or silvery (D). The closely related Autumn Olive (Elaeagnus umbellata) is a large shrub, has oval leaves, light yellow flowers and red fruit.

Grows where planted and in open areas and woodland edges, flowering in May and June. In Fontenelle Forest, rare at Camp Logan Fontenelle. At Neale Woods, uncommon along the edge of Jonas Prairie.
