TRUE CRICKETS (Gryllidae)

This native cricket is about 1/2 inch (12 mm) long.  The male has a reddish head and thorax.  Female is mostly brown with an obvious ovipositor.

 

This cricket is common in this area in late summer and early fall.  It ranges from Nebraska eastward.  It is generally found on vegetation close to the ground.

 

Also known as Say’s bush cricket. It was first discovered and named after Thomas Say back in 1825. He was a very prolific biologist who had discovered many new species during his travels throughout North America.
