The Scarlet-winged Lichen Moth has a wingspan of 1.25 to 1.50 inches. The thorax, abdomen and wings are usually red. The forewing has three black or dark gray lines with the middle one being shorter. The hindwing has a wide dark gray outer border. The more common Painted Lichen Moth is very similar, but it usually has a gray thorax. The larva is black with many criss-crossing yellow markings and long, black spines. It grows to about 1.5 inches. This moth was identified by volunteer experts at the BugGuide website.
The frequency of occurrence is not known. It has been photographed in Fontenelle Forest in mid-July. Adults are attracted to artificial lights.
The larvae feed on tree lichens and blue-green algae growing on trees, fallen logs and rocks. The caterpillars are cannibalistic on smaller larvae. The species overwinters as a caterpillar.
