SCRAPED PILOCROCIS

Pilocrocis ramentalis
CRAMBID SNOUT MOTHS (Crambidae)

The Scraped Pilocrocis has a wingspan of approximately one inch. The forewing is grayish brown with a slightly wavy white antemedian line and a sinuous white postmedian line. The postmedian line has a squarish convex lobe near the middle. The hindwing is grayish-brown with a single, white postmedian line that has a squarish convex lobe near the middle. The legs are white.

 

This uncommon moth has been seen once at Fontenelle Forest Nature Center in early November 2016. The main flight period is August to October. Its range is from Ontario to Florida west to Texas and Wisconsin. It is also found from Mexico to South America. It can be found in open woods, clearings, damp areas where the food plant grows. Adults are nocturnal and are attracted to lights.

 

The host plant is False Nettle (Boehmeria cylindrica).
