SEED EATING GROUND BEETLE

Amara sp.
GROUND BEETLES (Carabidae)

This beetle is bronze colored and range in size from 1/5 to ½ inch long. They have wings but generally move by walking.

Ground beetles live in or on the soil. They are nocturnal predators. Their overall occurrence in Fontenelle Forest is not known. This photo was taken on Gifford road near the stream.

They usually eat insects found in the soil but supplement their diets with plant parts. Beetles of this genus have been used as weed control agents.
