A small leafhopper about 1/4 inch long (6 mm) with a pointy head, brown eyes, gray/brown wings with white spots. There are several species in the genus Scaphytopius, all similar in appearance. The individuals shown are probably S. acutus, Sharp-nosed Leafhopper, but the experts at BugGuide identified it only to the genus level.

These leafhoppers are common in the eastern part of North America. The individual in image A was photographed on 30 May 2012 and image B on 10 November 2012.

Little is known about leafhoppers in the genus Scaphytopius. The common pointy-headed leafhopper in the central part of the country is the Sharp-nosed Leafhopper (Scapytopius acutus). There are two generations of young per year. They are considered to be a pest of soybean crops.
