The Shiny Gray Carpet Moth has a wingspan of 1 to 1.25 inches. The dorsal surface of the wings is plain brown except for some white markings on the costa of the forewing. The ventral surface of the forewing is plain brown and the ventral surface of the hindwing is gray-brown and mottled with black spots. The fringes on all wings are checkered black and white. The moth typically perches on the sides of tree trunks with the wings closed where it is very effectively camouflaghed. It also sits on the walls of buildings.

This moth is probably common in Fontenelle Forest and Neale Woods in September and October. Many individuals were observed flying around the upland forest at Fontenelle Forest in late September.

Very little seems to be known about this species. The larval foodplant is unknown. It is in the subfamily Larentiinae which has 5,800 species worldwide most of which occur in temperate regions. DNA data indicates they are a very ancient lineage of geometer moths and may be distinct enough to warrant elevation to full family status (Wickipedia).
