This goldenrod has a dense wand of flowers occuring on both sides of the stem (E), not just on one side (secund) as with most our other goldenrods. The stems are often reddish (B). The leaves are lance-shaped and opposite on stems (C,D).
One cluster of plants of this species was first discovered in the Camp Brewster restored prairie in late August 2014; it was probably a part of the original prairie plant mix. Its present status in uncertain as it has not been seen recently. Perhaps this single population has not survived.
