SILVANID FLAT BARK BEETLES (Silvanidae)

This is a small light reddish-brown beetle about 1/3 inch long (5 mm). The edges of the elytra are paler than the center. This beetle is flattened in form and the elytra are striate or lined.

This beetle was found under bark on Ridge trail. Its overall occurrence at Fontenelle Forest is not known. In general beetles of this family occur under dead bark or in rotten wood.

A few of the beetles in this family live in ant nests. Silvanid flat bark beetles once were part of the Cucujidae family but have now been reclassified to their own family.
