SKELETONIZING LEAF BEETLE

LEAF BEETLE FAMILY (Chrysomelidae)

This beetle is about one third inch long and is cream colored with black stripes on the abdomen and black spots on the thorax. The pronotum is somewhat narrower than the elytra and the elytra are broadest at the rear. We have been only able to identify it to genus.

 

Host plants include sunflowers, thistles and goldenrod. This beetle was photographed under artificial lights at the Wetlands learning center in July.

 

There are 25 species of this genus in N. America. Skeltonizing leaf beetles belong to the subfamily Galerucinae.The larva skeletonize the undersurface of leaves and the adults eat small holes in the leaves.
