This species is a little over an inch in length and is recognizable by the pale turquoise blue pattern of the head and thorax, narrow black shoulder stripes and a dark abdomen with a blue tip. Both sexes have large blue eye spots on the back of the head with an occipital bar. The male has a slender, black abdomen with narrow blue rings between the segments and segment 8 and 9 are all blue. The female has a thicker dark, gray abdomen with segments 8, 9 and 10 being blue.

 

This species can be seen at the Great Marsh in Fontenelle Forest in mid-June through July. Look for it perched on vegetation over the water or on the shoreline.

 

This species is found at vegetated lakes and large ponds, often with a woodland edge. They are frequently seen perched on floating vegetation in shaded areas.
