This aquatic liverwort usually is seen floating on the water surface in clumps, often together with other aquatic plants such as Duckweed (Lemna minor). Image “A” is taken in the field – that clump was about an inch in diameter. That image was taken in October. In an exception to our rules, the other two images were taken in a controlled environment to better show plant details. The stag-horn like branches remind us of other thallus liverworts (B,C).

This aquatic plant is considered uncommon in Fontenelle Forest, as well as in our local area. It has only been seen in that part of the Stream near the bridge. This plant usually can’t compete for light when fast-growing Duckweed is present.

This aquatic plant is a favorite of fresh water fish enthusiasts. The small fry can readily hide from predators when clumps of this plant is available for them in aquariums.
