SNOWY-SHOULDERED ACLERIS

Acleris nivisellana
TORTRICID MOTH FAMILY (Tortricidae)

The Snowy-shouldered Acleris moth has a wingspan of about 5/8 inch. The forewing is white with irregular patches of light gray and reddish-brown. Reddish tufts mark the antemedial and postmedial areas. The indented costa has a large blackish semicircular patch mid-way. The hindwing is brownish-gray with a wide pale fringe.

 

The frequency of occurrence in this area is not known. It was photographed at Fontenelle Forest Nature Center in late February 2017. It ranges from southern Canada and the northern U.S. south to Georgia and in the west from British Columbia to California. The main flight period is March to November.

 

The larval foodplants are Pin Cherry, Hawthorn, Crabapple, Ninebark and Mountain Ash.
