This beetle is dark with white markings on the elytra. It is close to ½ inch long (9-11 mm). It was identified with the help of experts at Bugguide.net.

It is found throughout the eastern U.S. Its occurrence at Fontenelle Forest is not known. This one was photographed at Neale Woods.

This beetle flies with its elytra closed. It thus looks more like a bee in flight than a beetle. Both larvae and adults are nocturnal. But adults are sometimes active during the day. It is also known as the Dark flower scarab.
