This non-native, weedy annual species was introduced from Europe. It has separate and small male and female flower clusters crowded in spikes on the same plant, growing up to 3 feet tall. The triangular shaped fruit holds it’s developing seeds.

This weedy annual species prefers salty soil like salt marshes and ditches next to winter salted roads. Examples of this plant were photographed at Camp Brewster; it’s abundance is not yet known.  It flowers from July to September.

This species has a number of other common names, including Common Orach and Spear Saltbush.
