SPHENOPHORUS BILLBUG

Sphenophorus compressirostris
WEEVIL FAMILY (Curculionidae)

This beetle is black with cream colored spots on the body. It is approximately ¾ inch long. It was identified by Dr. Charles W. O’Brien on Bug Guide.

 

The host plants are grasses, sedges and other monocots. Larvae bore in stems and roots. This beetle was found and photographed on wet soil by the boat dock at the great marsh. Its overall occurrence at the Nature center is not known.

 

It belongs to the subfamily Dryopthorinae whose members have football-shaped bodies. Members of this genus are called billbugs. Billbug larva are often confused with white grubs, which is the name usually given to beetle larvae in the genus Phyllophaga, family Scarabaeidae.
