Identification

This is a dark brown to reddish brown bug about a half inch long ( 10-15 mm).  Its head, thorax and front leg are covered with spines.  It was identified with the help of experts at Bugguide.net  It has a long narrow head that supports a short beak.

 

This bug is usually found in weedy fields and meadows.  It is often found among flowers and crops.  It is found throughout North America.  It is probably common in Fontenelle Forest but is seldom seen.

 

It is also known as the common brown assassin bug. If hungry, it will resort to cannibalism, eating surrounding siblings. Bites are painful and can cause a burning, itching sensation, as well as swelling at the site of the bite.
