SPOTTED-WINGED ANTLION

Description
This antlion is about 1.5 inches (38 mm) long. It has black circular spots on the wings giving it a distinctive appearance in this region. It has a long, thin abdomen with white spots on each segment. Legs are black and antennae are two-toned pink and black. The larvae are called doodlebugs because of their appearance and habits. The larvae are known to live in dead wood or in dry tree holes. Click here to see a larva of this species.

Occurrence
This antlion ranges throughout eastern North America and flies from July through September. It is considered to be common in this area.

Comments
The adults are often attracted to lights.
