This is a reddish brown to black beetle and is about ½ inch long. Its antenna are not elbowed. These photographs are of males where the mandibles are the length of the head.

 

The beetle in A. was photographed on Walking Club Trail. We don’t know how common it is in Fontenelle Forest. Photo C is the beetle with larva and was photographed on Chickadee Trail. The beetle in photo D was taken at Neale Woods.

 

The larvae occur in decaying hardwood trees.
