FRUIT FLY FAMILY (Tephritidae)

The Strauzia fruit fly is about 3/8 inch (10 mm) long from tip of antennae to wingtip. The head is yellow with yellow antennae and red eyes. The male fly has two rows of thick, black bristles on his head. The thorax is yellow with brown and rufous markings. The abdomen is brown. The wings are clear with intricate patterns of brown markings including a large “F” shape on the wingtips. This fly was identified by a volunteer expert from the BugGuide website.

 

The frequency of occurrence at Fontenelle Forest and Neale Woods is not known. The individual shown here was photographed in Fontenelle Forest in early April 2012.

 

There are 12 species in the genus Strauzia in North America. The larval food plants are members of the sunflower family (Asteraceae). The larvae bore into the stems and feed on the pith.
