This Sawfly is about .50 inch long. The female has a black head and thorax. The first and last 3 abdominal segments are black and the middle segments are orange. The male is all black. The wings are clear. This sawfly was identified by volunteer experts at the BugGuide website.

The frequency of occurrence is not known. The individuals shown here were photographed at Fontenelle Forest in late April 2013.

There are eleven species in the genus Strongylogaster in North America. The larvae feed on ferns. Sawfly larvae spend the winter in the ground as pupae.
