This solitary tree is found in Fontenelle Forest near the kiosk on the Child’s Hollow dike (B,D). It had been planted there in 1935 from seeds originating in Ohio. Its bark is gray and furrowed (F). Its green leaves have 3-5 pointed lobes, typical of the maple leaf (A). It displays its distinctive red foliage in October (E). Another Sugar Maple, planted between Bellevue Boulevard and the Visitors Center parking lot, may be studied more readily, since the leaves and fruit hang closer to the ground. But this may be a different variety.
