This is a medium sized tree (40-70 feet). The leaves are alternate, simple and wavy toothed. The acorns are on long stalks often in pairs. Light brown scales enclose about 1/3 of the nut

Four of these trees were planted on the four islands in the nature center parking lot in 2000.Its occurrence in Nebraska is only in the south eastern portion of the state. It prefers rich moist soil along streams and swamps. The bark is gray brown and deeply fissured.

This oak is in the white oak group of oaks and thus the meat of the acorn is sweet and edible. The wood is hard, tough, heavy and strong. It closely resembles that of white oak and is used similarly for furniture, railway ties, fence posts and many other purposes.
