This Syrphid Fly larva is about 1″ long and has a slug-like appearance. It is overall milky white with dark brownish-purple markings down the middle of the back.

The frequency of occurrence is not known. Syrphid Flies are common in Fontenelle Forest and Neale Woods, so it is expected that these larvae are common. The larva was photographed at Camp Brewster, Fontenelle Forest, in early June 2013, on Cup Rosinweed that was infested with aphids. Since aphids are its primary food source they can be found on plants where aphids are present.

Syrphid Fly larvae are predators of aphids and other related species. The adults feed on nectar, pollen and the honeydew produced by aphids.
