This crane fly is approximately 1 inch in length. The head, thorax and abdomen are yellow-orange. The abdomen has brown cross-bands. The legs are a tan color and very long. The wings are clear with dark brown veins.

 

There is little known about the frequency of occurrence of this crane fly in this area. The individual shown here was photographed in Fontenelle Forest in July.

 

There are 40 species in the genus Nephrotoma in North America. This genus is usually identified by wing venation and the “polished” look of the body. This individual was identified from photographs by volunteer experts at the BugGuide website.
