A medium sized crane fly, about 1/2 to 3/4 inch (13-19 mm) in length. Wings are longitudinally striped with brown and whitish patterns. The halteres are prominent, extending below the wings on long stalks. Legs are very long, light brown with darker brown at the joints. The abdomen is brown with a dorsal longitudinal whitish stripe.
The distribution of this crane fly is eastern U.S. and Canada ranging from Nebraska and Kansas eastward. It has been photographed only once, in August 2015, at Fontenelle Forest but is probably common in this area.
Adults are often found in grassy areas along streams. Larvae are aquatic and live in moist debris or saturated earth along streams.
