Toothed Brown Carpet

Toothed Brown Carpet

Xanthorhoe lacustrata
GEOMETER MOTH FAMILY (Geometridae)

The Toothed Brown Carpet has a wingspan of about 1 inch. The forewing is pale gray with a reddish-brown basal patch and shading beyond. The antemedial line is relatively smooth and gently curving. The wide median band is blackish-brown. There is a white, scalloped subterminal band. The postmedial area is tan and the subterminal area is light brown. The discal spot is reduced or absent. The line bordering the dark median area is indented above the tooth and the apical patch is irregular (not square). The hindwing is pale grayish-brown. The larva has a rough brown body and a smooth greenish yellow head. It grows to about 1 inch.

The Toothed Brown Carpet is probably uncommon in this area. It has been photographed once at Fontenelle Forest Nature Center in late July 2015. Adults fly from April to September.

The host plants are birch, blackberry, hawthorne, impatiens and willow.
