TUFTED APPLE BUD MOTH

The Tufted Apple Bud Moth has a wingspan of about 1 inch (25 mm). The forewing is brown overall with a dark brown squarish patch in the median area. The dark brown antemedial line starts near the middle of the inner margin and angles up towards the costa. The dark brown postmedial and subterminal lines are wavy. The hindwing is plain brown.

 

The frequency of occurrence of this moth at Fontenelle Forest and Neale Woods is not known. One individual has been photographed at Fontenelle Forest Nature Center in late August 2015 coming to lights. Adults fly June through August.

 

The larvae eat the leaves of various low plants and trees including apple, black walnut, box elder, clover, goldenrod, pine and willow.
