TWO HORNED DARKLING BEETLE

Neomida bicornis
DARKLING BEETLES (Tenebrionidae)

This is a metallic green beetle about 1/4 inch long (5 mm). The male beetle has four horns, two prominent and two smaller less prominent ones below. The female beetle has no horns.

 

This beetle is usually found inside shelf fungi. Its occurrence at Fontenelle Forest is not known. This one was photographed on Missouri River Trail.

 

Many members of this family release repulsive aromatic chemicals when threatened or handled.
