This planthopper is about 1/4 inch long in its mature state and resembles a green leaf. It is identified to species by the two reddish-brown edges of its wings and its red eyes. The nymph is even smaller, see photos 2,3, and 4. Both adults and nymphs feed on the juices of various plants; the nymph produces the waxy filaments shown in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th images from excess water.
Not often seen in our two nature centers, except by carefully observing plant stems and leaves. They are probably quite common.
The most common and widespread of the 19 species in the genus Acanalonia.
