VIRGINIAN TIGER MOTH

The wingspan is about 1 1/4 inches. The wings are white with a few scattered black spots of varying sizes. The head is white and furry. The abdomen is white and furry with black bands and an orange marking. The larvae, known as the Yellow Woolly Bear, are nearly 2 inches long and are variable in color from yellow to dark brown. They have a mixture of shorter to very long hairs.

 

This is a very common moth in this area.

 

The larvae feed on many plants including birch, cabbage, corn, maple, squash, sunflower, walnut and willow.
