VIVID GROUND BEETLE

VIVID GROUND BEETLE

Chaelinus sp.
GROUND BEETLES (Carabidae)

This beetle is colored with a vivid brown color. Members of this genus are medium-sized to large (1/3 to 1 inch). It is covered with hairs that lie flat on the elytra. It was identified by experts at Bugguide.net.

Most species of this genus are found in moist areas, some are semiaquatic. This one was found at Camp Brewster.

Members of this genus often have vivid metallic coloration. They smell foul when disturbed. Some species lay eggs in mud cells placed on the undersides of leaves or twigs. Cell morphology can be distinctive for a species. Presumably most species have one generation per year, with adults overwintering to breed in spring. They often come to lights. Ground beetles like tiger beetles are active predators.
