This strange looking caterpillar – only some of its legs are recognizable – adorns itself with petals of the flowers it is feeding on, in this case Queen Anne’s Lace (Daucus carota). The caterpillar is about 3/4 inch long. They feed on a variety of low-growing plants such as aster, goldenrod and ragweed. These caterpillars are able to overwinter. The adult moth is pale green, with a wingspan of up to 1 inch. Their forewings have two wavy, white lines.

The adult is a common moth in Fontenelle Forest and Neale Woods.

The caterpillar is also known as Camouflaged Looper.
