The Whitney’s Underwing Moth has a wingspan of 1.75 inches. The forewing is dark brown with 2 black triangles, one over the reniform spot and the other outside the ante-medial line. The hindwing is yellow-orange with 2 black bands.
The frequency of occurrence is not known. The individual shown here was photographed at Neale Woods on July 7, 2013 coming to artificial lights. The adults are most common in July and August.
The host plants are reported to be leadplant, oak and locust. There are 110 species in the genus Catocala in North America.
