WIDE-FOOTED TREEHOPPER

This treehopper is identified by its leaf-like front legs and spiny hind legs. They are light brown, with a forward-pointed “horn”. These treehoppers are often tended by ants because of the honeydew they produce.

 

This specimen was photographed on Canada goldenrod (Solidago canadensis) at Fontenelle Forest in early October. It is common though not often seen.
