15 inches long, The Willet is a large, plump, grayish sandpiper with grayish legs. In breeding plumage there is spotting on the breast. In flight it shows a black and white pattern on the wings.

The Willet is uncommon at Fontenelle Forest and will usually be seen around shallow water or at the edge of ponds or lakes.

The WIllet is a drab looking bird but when it flies the wings show a conspicuous black and white pattern. For this reason it is sometimes called “The Surprise Bird”.
