10 inches long. The Wilson’s Snipe is a medium -sized sandpiper with brown and black mottled upperparts and long buff stripes on back. The underparts are white with dark bars on sides and flanks. The head, neck and breast are heavily streaked. The belly is white with dark bars on the sides. The legs and feet are yellow-green. The bill is very long and straight. Sexes are similar.

The Wilson’s Phalarope is uncommon in the Omaha area and rarely seen in Fontenelle Forest.

The Wilson’s Phalarope will sometimes swim in circles to stir up food. The roles of the males and females are reversed with males sitting on the nest rather than the females.
