This native perennial grows to 6 feet and taller. The lance-shaped leaves, up to 8 inches long, are alternate on an erect stem, which has “wings” on four sides (C). The numerous domed flower heads have a somewhat ragged appearance, with 2-10 drooping yellow ray florets. Often there are flowers that have lost all their ray florets leaving only the globe-shaped central disk (B). The greenish-yellow, tubular disk florets are unusually prominent giving the flower a ‘pincushion-like’ appearance (A).
Common on the floodplain and in ravines at both Fontenelle Forest and Neale Woods. Also, occasionally seen in upland areas at Fontenelle Forest. Flowering occurs from July through September.
