This beetle is about 5/8 inch long. It has a wide pronotum and iridescent black elytra. Experts at Bugguide helped identify this beetle.

 

Members of this genus often live in moist rotten logs or on wet ground. This beetle was photographed in Childs Hollow in September.

 

Some experts put this beetle in the genus Abacidus although most feel Abacisus is only a subgenus of Pterostichus.
