This skipper has a wingspan of 1 to 1 3/8 inches (33 mm). Ventrally, the male’s hindwing is mostly yellow with brown at the base and along the margin. There is a large rust, brown spot in the yellow area. Dorsally, the male is yellow-orange with dark brown borders on the wings, narrower than on Hobomok. The forewing has a thin black cell-end bar. The female is dark brown dorsally and has a row of squarish glassy white spots in the disk of the forewing. Ventrally, the female’s hindwing is dark reddish-brown with lighter tan and purplish spots and a sharp white margin.
This butterfly is common from August through September. It is usually seen along Stream Trail and Marsh Trail nectaring on flowers.
The host plants are various grasses. Adults nectar on a variety of flowers.
