ZENOA PICEA

ZENOA PICEA

Zenoa picea
CEDAR BEETLES (Callirhipidae)

This beetle is brownish black and about ¾ to 1 inch long. Its antenna has about 11 segments and is comblike. This beetle was identified with the aid of experts of Bugguide.net. The specimen in the photo appears to be a male based on its comblike antenna.

Larva of this beetle are found in old rotten wood. Adults are short lived but active at night and are often found at night. Indeed, this one was photographed at night at the Wetlands Learning Center after being attracted to lights.

This is the only member of this family found in N. America. It is a state record for Nebraska. This family was split out of the other cedar beetle family, Rhipiceridae.
