ORB WEAVER FAMILY (Araneidae)

This spider grows to less than 1/2 inch long. It has a triangular shield which looks like an arrow-head, which in turn reflects its common name. Images (A) and (B) also show a delicate reddish-brown pattern on a lighter colored shield, which can also be yellow. This orb weaver is somewhat unique because it sits head up in its web. The others are usually found sitting head down. Image (C) shows its underside.

Usually found in a web, centered about eye-level, in moist woodland ravines or near water. Considered common in Fontenelle Forest. A good place to look is in Handsome Hollow during late summer.
