This small spider, less than 1/4 inch long, can best be seen when morning dew reveals its distinctive web. It is usually found low off the ground in tall grass or other low vegetation. The main web is bowl-shaped, constructed horizontally. Below a horizontal platform (doily) is built, giving it its common name (C). This spider has a white to yellowish pattern on the black sides of its abdomen (A,B). Compare with the Filmy Dome Spider (Neriene radiata) which has a similar size and shape, but different coloration.

Found in open woodlands, especially low near the ground among tall grasses and low shrubs. Considered common in Fontenelle Forest, for instance in open woodland along Cottonwood Trail.

This spider lurks beneath its “bowl”, ready to catch any small insect which may get caught in the tangled web. It then bites its catch through the web. The shape of its web may also protect this spider from other predators attacking from above.
